Here, we are introduced to the notion of artifactual communication, so named because it's "an artifact of how the system is implemented". While inherent communication costs are directly associated with the operations of the algorithm, artifactual communication describes all other costs incurred in the execution. For instance, when we attempt to load an int from memory, the inherent communication cost is that of moving a single int, but since the system will load a full cache line during this operation, the artifactual communication cost is that of loading the cache line.
