In indirect network, interior nodes are switches, exterior nodes are end points.

In direct network, end point is inside the network, which means all network nodes are end points.

But I guess most real networks are hybrids of the above two.

To review, in a direct network, each node has its own switch. In an indirect network, however, the nodes sit outside the network.
