This is the first time that I have seen a core that is not a rectangle. Is there a reason for the stair shaped cores in the apple cpu?

I think it was mentioned in lecture that this was a design choice to conserve space, but I don't know a more specific reason for the particular shape.

I don't know either, buy my best guess is that the structure that sits between the two cores needed to have a particular shape, and it didn't create a problem for the cores to make them staircase-shaped. Cores themselves are made up of lots of rectangular parts, so it's not that surprising that they could be shaped like this.
