Torus can be thought as a mesh topology with nodes in rectilinear arrays of 2 or more dimensions. In an N dimensional torus, each node has 2N connections (4 here). I think this complexity makes it difficult to fabricate on a chip for a largeer dimensions.

In practice, the 3D torus are used in data center networks and by supercomputers - IBM Blue Gene/L and P.
