I don't quite understand this slide, especially the part "contention reduced by factor of N". Can someone explain? Thanks!

I believe that the amount of contention for a particular cell in the grid will be reduced by N because you have N separate grids that have each their own set of particles. So for a particular cell on one of those partial grids you will have N times fewer particles on average, assuming an optimal distribution of particles among the partial grids.
