I don't know if this is a realistic expectation for how actual processors work, but I wonder if having the different participants compute the current total sum as they finished their own piles would have improved the time by a couple seconds since the last person was left to add 4 numbers as opposed to 1.

That's a very good insight, @Nesuna. Computing partial sums along the way may help for the reason that you mentioned.
