In lecture this slide showed an animation of the red blocks moving along the linked list as a group of two, where each subsequent step involved the far left red section to move to the next available cell on the right. This is the idea of "hand-over-hand" locking which ensures write operation integrity. Since the list must be traversed from left to right, you will only have access to an element if you have locked it's cell and those cell's that are dependents.
