Work imbalance can result in a significant performance loss; for example, if only one processor had a lot of work, this would be similar to having a large sequential fraction and result in speedup loss based on Amdahl's law. Instead appropriate assignment of work between processors (for example, using work queues as we see in later lectures) can result in improved speedup.
