In order to continue Moore's law, many suggest we will need a new way to express logic in hardware, or at least a new transistor architecture. Some possible examples are the memristor (http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/26/tech/mci-eth-memristor), and the "Mott Transistor" (http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/semiconductors/devices/first-mott-transistor-offers-powerful-new-type-of-semiconductor). In the past we have already transitioned from 2D-FETs to fin-FETs which utilized 3d space better.
