In the two-phase locking scheme, you may acquire as many locks as necessary during the Growing Phase but once you reach the Shrinking Phase, you cannot acquire any more locks although you may still perform operations on values you still have locked (haven't unlocked yet).

You can use readers-writers locks instead, but the protocol of using a growing phase to acquire the locks and shrinking phase to release the locks will remain the same.
