In the normal directory based protocol, the home node responds to the requesting node with the owner's id. The requesting node then requests the data from the owner, which sends the data to both the home node and the requesting node. In the intervention forwarding optimization, however, the home node acts as a middleman by requesting data from the owner node, getting the response, and sending the response back to the requesting node.
