CPU can only execute a particular graphics pipeline. That is to say, once the output screen, the pointers to the vertices and the program text, etc. are set up, there is no way to execute any other computation except for this particular pipeline.

Interestingly, the US Air Force built a cluster of 1700 Playstation 3s in 2010 to run image recognition software. It seems like PS3's are based on the GeForce 7800, which doesn't support CUDA, but they say the system was particularly cheap for the performance. Sometimes cutting-edge isn't the way to go :) !
