Why is the Single-thread Performance and the Frequency projected to decrease? Can't we use the same machines to achieve at least the same performance?

yes

@williamx I think this may be due to the fact that each of the data lines in the graph are correlated with each other - so even though single threaded performance and frequency decrease, the number of transistors is increasing while power and number of cores remains relatively constant, so tradeoffs are made between them. I suppose it just shows the trend of where machines are going in the future, i.e. what particular traits people are focusing on.

This links back to one of the first lectures in the class when we learned how manufacturers moved to increasing core count rather than continuing to increase processor speed, leading to the importance of parallel programming
