The Zigbee IoT protocol is a good example of how a network topology affects routing. Zigbee networks can have varying topologies, but the most common ones are a star topology with a central node in the center of the network, and the surrounding nodes. All messages passed in this protocol go to the central node, and to the destination, which does not allow much for fault-tolerance. However, when a mesh topology is used, fault-tolerance becomes easier to implement, as there are multiple paths from one node to another. As such, self-healing algorithms can be used to deliver a message around a node in the original path, should that node no longer be available. This essentially allows for dynamic construction of paths from a source node to a destination node.
