@Question I was just curious. Is there a more formal-sounding definition of "throughput"? Intuitively I can see what it means but it would be helpful to define it carefully (it can sound like 1/latency, for example)

Throughput is simply a general term describing the rate of completion of operations.

For example bandwidth (bits/sec) is a measure of throughput. Jobs per second is a measure of throughput.
