Boy I'm glad I came in late.

I am not sure that this slide is correct. It is possible that in the next 65 years the human race will have found ways to expand the lifespan of the human race. I also think that it is possible for people to live past age 86, in fact several members of the human race have performed this feat.

@lament: You should be; I wish I had. For context these were some motivating examples to get the class into the same frame of mind as the guest lecturer. (His transition from this into the next slide was "and now the one that's really ****ing me up".)

It was an interesting intro to the lecture. How many other lectures at cmu have started in such a way?

I think it was a good way of illustrating that he cares about his research problems. He is trying to communicate that he cares as much about scaling databases to 1000 cores as society at large cares about problems that we generally accept to be dire in nature.

No, no - you all misunderstand what I meant. I am glad I came in late to avoid the voodoo-spellcasting associated with this slide - since I was not in the room, it is not the case that I will necessarily die in 65 years. For everyone else - sorry, folks, times' tickin'.

BryceToTheCore

@lament I also came in late and was glad to avoid the jinx.

I do not believe that I misunderstood what you meant, but rather I tried to add my own slightly humorous or idiosyncratic anecdote to accompany your comment in an attempt to build camaraderie between us lecture slide commentators. ;)
