To what extent does NVIDIA have a monopoly on GPUs?

Is this an example of a field where industry is seen as the primary force of progress?

Berry

@ak47 NVIDIA and AMD are in close competition. Don't forget that most generations of consoles and handhelds have an AMD GPU because it's so much cheaper. From what I remember NVIDIA has been the first to introduce many new architectures and does most of the research done in the industry - that was a while ago.

So on the slide it hints at the fact that OpenCL can run on CPUs as well as GPUs. Does this mean running on the embedded GPUs that most CPUs ship with, or does it run native on the CPU? And if it does indeed run on the CPU, what's the performance like compared with ISPC, etc, given CPUs generally don't have many cores or very wide SIMD vectors as compared with GPUs.
