I want to point out that this implementation of the thread abstraction is completely arbitrary.

As an alternative, it is possible to have threads running entirely in user space, which do not communicate with the OS. These types of threads also cannot utilize multiple cores.

@smklein: Good point. This particular slide illustrates only one potential implementation. The implementation of a threading API might be a library that manages threads almost entirely in application space, or a library that leans on the OS to do most of the thread management work. (However, I wouldn't go as far as to say the implementation is "arbitrary", as building it this way would be quite reasonable. ;-))
